BOXING RECAP: FIGUEROA JR. RETURNS HOME AFTER VICTORY OVER SALCIDO

After capturing a unanimous decision victory over Dominic Salcido (18-4, 9 KO’s) this past Saturday on HBO “Boxing After Dark”, Weslaco’s Omar Figueroa Jr. (19-0-1, 15 KO’s) had only one thing on his mind and that was getting home.

The Golden Boy prospect has been busy in the boxing world lately as he has been in the ring three times in the past month and a half and told me on Monday that he is glad to finally take a break.

As for the fight, Figueroa Jr. landed the heavier blows in the contest as he kept Salcido off balance by switching between southpaw and conventional the entire bout. In the exchanges where Figueroa would let his hands go, he was able to get off first and the counterpunching from his opponent just couldn’t seem to keep pace.

Neither fighter was ever in serious danger except for the first round when Salcido almost dropped Figueroa with a vicious punch. However, Figueroa rebounded from that and put rounds in the bank with his continuous attacks to the body throughout the remainder of the fight.

BOXING RECAP OF “BORDER EXPLOSION”

While I was sitting at the Doctor’s office on Monday, I was reminiscing about this weekend’s fights.

There were definitely some impressive performances on Saturday night and a huge upset as well.

The one that really comes to mind was Houston’s Victor Sanchez who pulled a huge upset victory over Brownsville’s Jerry Guevara. Guevara was coming off a huge win against one of Manny Pacquiao’s fighters and went into the fight with a perfect 7-0 record while Sanchez comes in with a 2-3 record.

Most people saw this fight as a cakewalk for Guevara and didn’t give Sanchez a chance in you know what. But little do people know that Sanchez defeated two top prospects from Top Rank and has been involved in some tough fights.

Early in the fight, Guevara was controlling the action and even sent Sanchez to the canvas in the first round. Once I saw that I figured it was going to be a quick bout.

But Sanchez came back strong and ended up knocking Guevara down not once, twice, or even three times. In fact, he sent Guevara crashing down to the canvas an impressive four times as he caught him with some thunderous body shots.

After the fight, we at the media table all had Sanchez winning the fight but weren’t sure how the judges would call it. Well, they agreed with us and Sanchez ended up getting the victory.

THIRD TIME WAS NOT A CHARM FOR PIEDRA AND RUIZ

Coming into Saturday night, I was excited about seeing the return of Jerry Belmontes to the ring and getting a chance to witness a possible future Heavyweight champion in Odlanier Solis.

But the match I really was looking forward to watching was the Felix Piedra and Juan Ruiz fight. This fight has been built up as a “Bad Blood” match due to the fact that a lot of trash talking was going on between the two of them and they have had three scheduled fights in the past year which never happened.

During the day of the weigh-in, I had a chance to talk to both Juan and Felix and they were glad that the fight was finally going to happen and so were the spectators in attendance.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS FOR 2012 (PART ONE)

As 2011 comes to a close, many people are working on their New Year’s resolutions for 2012. Some of the most popular resolutions people try to accomplish are losing weight, saving money, or trying to give up a bad habit.

While I was thinking about what my New Year’s resolution was going to be, I began to wonder what the fighters, promoters, trainers, the staff at RGV Canvas Warriors.com, the RGV Canvas Dolls and our sponsors were going to do for their resolutions.

With that said, I decided to work on a little project and call a few of them and find out what they were. So I decided to make some calls and wanted to share them with our loyal readers and fans. Here is part one of the two part series. Hope you enjoy this and I want to wish you all a very Happy New Year.
