FUENTES HEADLINES UWF 2 AGAINST JONES
PHARR – Edinburg native Dee Jay Fuentes (9-7) impressed Ultimate Warrior Fighting promoter Oscar Enriquez so much at UWF 1 in November that he wanted to reward him for his 3rd round TKO victory over heavy favorite Nick “The Ghost” Gonzalez.
Well, Enriquez lived up to his word as he rewarded the current 145-pound STFC champion by putting him in the main event against Chris Jones, the current XKO 155-pound champion at Ultimate Warrior Fighting 2 on March 17th at the Pharr Events Center.
“After his last performance at UWF 1 against Nick, I felt Dee Jay was ready for a main event fight,” said Enriquez. “I am proud to have him headline this card and feel he is going to be in another tough test against Jones.”
Fuentes, who was recently voted as the people’s choice for Texas MMA “Comeback Fighter of the Year” for 2011, said he is extremely excited about getting a chance to fight in the main event of UWF 2 and against another champion from another faction.
“This is a huge opportunity for me to fight in the main event of UWF 2 and what makes this fight even sweeter is the fact that Chris and I are both champions,” said Fuentes. “Chris is a very experienced fighter and a striker just like Nick. He comes in with a good record (6-1) and has four knockouts as well, but I am not going to take him lightly.”
“I have improved drastically on my striking and proved it when I took out Randy Villarreal and Nick. I am planning on testing Jones’s chin and am going for the knockout victory.”
Fuentes feels his confidence improved drastically after defeating Gonzalez, but said there were a lot of things in that fight that he needed to improve on and vowed he would become the fighter he knows he can be in this fight.
“Going into the fight against Nick, I was a huge underdog and nobody gave me a chance because he had more experience that I did. But I got the job done and that win really boosted my confidence.”
“However, I was a little timid going in against him and didn’t showcase all of my skills. I realized what I left out in that fight and have worked on them for this fight. I am going to be a lot more explosive in this fight and plan on holding nothing back.”
Fuentes said that on March 17th, he guarantees victory and will show everyone, including Jones why they call him “TNT”.
“There is no way Jones is coming down here and going back to Dallas victorious,” said Fuentes. “The bomb is ticking for me and I plan on going out there and showing him why they call me ‘TNT’.”
“When the main event finally happens, the fireworks will start going off and I will definitely provide and explosion.”
